About me About me

WWWelcome
Welcome to this website which is launched as a 'one stop' site for mathematicians, educationalists, teachers, lecturers and students.I have now added a second teacher's page to the site so hope you enjoy the additional content....if you have any comments then I hope you will email me.

Women Mathematicians
Carol Vorderman on www.mathsteach.com intended for mathematics teachers, mathematics lecturers, mathematicians and educationalistsAt last, a web page devoted to providing biographies of women in mathematics .....and not just the usual pitiful few that most sites provide. The pages are part of a project by students in Atlanta, Georgia and found by visiting the Biographies of Women Mathematicians site.

Health & fitness
I am a great believer in introducing practical work into mathematics lessons but have you ever thought about exercise? You will find some excellent ideas on the Aerobi-graphs site which links physical activities to graphs and transformations.Lots of potential for cross curricular work with PE too!!!

Nosey neighbours
The latest from the statistics.gov.uk site allows you to look at the 2001 census details which have been broken down into 175 000 areas giving you free access to information about your immediate neigbourhood....I just found out that the average age of folk living is Eastbourne is 43.2 years (national average is 38.6). Visit the site at the Neighbourhood Statistics website.

Fermat's last theorem
Recently came across a really readable site on Fermat's last theorem which I am sure you and your students will find most interesting. In particular, I found the following quote (given in an interview with the BBC) from Andrew Wiles who is well known for proving Fermat's last theorem:

"Perhaps I can best describe my experience of doing mathematics in terms of a journey through a dark unexplored mansion. You enter the first room of the mansion and it's completely dark. You stumble around bumping into the furniture, but gradually you learn where each piece of furniture is. Finally, after six months or so, you find the light switch, you turn it on, and suddenly it's all illuminated. You can see exactly where you were."

Sounds a little bit like mathematics to me!

Guest House Update
Gladwyn hotel on www.mathsteach.com intended for mathematics teachers, mathematics lecturers, mathematicians and educationalistsThis site is not party to any sponsorship deals so that your screen should not be bombarded by advertising banners. However, maybe one small plug is acceptable and I would like to draw your attention to a certain guest house on the south coast in Eastbourne. You can visit the website, which now offers a virtual tour of the rooms, at www.gladwynhotel.com or, better still, why not arrange a visit in person.

ps To ensure an appropriate ranking on various search engines, I am reminded to include the words "maths", "mathematics", "education" and "resources" somewhere on this page.

pps To ensure an appropriate ranking on various search engines, I'll just include the words "maths", "mathematics", "education" and "resources" one more time.

ppps Now I am told that I have to include the words ""maths", "mathematics", "education" and "resources" at least four times on the front page - so one more "maths", "mathematics", "education" and "resources" should just about do it.....
